WOOD INNOVATION INFO PAVILION AS A PART OF REGIONAL INNOVATION CENTRE IN WATTWIL - FIRST PRIZE
As a part of the masterplan for a new development area in Wattwil, in cooperation with merklidegen architekten, we proposed an information pavilion related to the themes of the proposed masterplan project, wood processing, and wood craftsmanship.
The pavilion is a lightweight wooden lattice cube with the dimensions of 5x5x5m, elevated 2.5m from the ground. The installation shows in a funny way various aspects of traditional and digital wood processing.
During the day one can see the icons of traditional wooden tools: saw, hammer, hatchet, and chainsaw. Each side of the cube shows a different tool. The roof contains vertical wooden panels, casting shadows on the ground: in the course of daytime, the shade of a tree changes over into the shade of a house. During the night, LEDs integrated into the lattice show symbols related to the subject of digitalization and artificial intelligence: the human brain, glowing light bulb, CNC milling machine and a robot. The LEDs are programmable, therefore projected symbols can be influenced by the inhabitants of Wattwil. Another wooden cube, placed under the lattice, a solid wood monolith with a built-in weatherproof touchscreen provides information about the planned project and its participants.
